Ballina RSL
Mary's Place - Fostering Safety, Nurturing Community
The partnership between Ballina RSL and Mary's Place is a vivid example of community collaboration. Recent grants from Ballina RSL have facilitated the establishment of a vegetable garden at Mary's Place. This initiative not only provides fresh produce but also educates and engages community members in gardening, enhancing their connection to nature and each other. Recent grants from the Club will also allow the venue to establish a vegetable garden. This highlights the tangible benefits of the partnership, underscoring their commitment to not just immediate needs but also long-term community resilience and education. With the challenge of limited social housing availability in Ballina, particularly since the floods, Mary's Place has been innovative in providing support within their means. Mary's Place has recently launched Free Haircut Wednesdays, a collaboration with Headroom Hair in Ballina, offering complimentary haircuts and grooming services. This initiative exemplifies the community's collective effort to provide dignity and care to those who need it most.

Bankstown Sports
Toy Drive Hero Spreads Joy to Sick Children
Brian - who is affectionately known as ‘Dubba’ by friends and family – has been a member of Bankstown Sports Bowls Club prior to Bankstown Sports amalgamating with the original venue in 2008. Roughly 30 years ago, Dubba began building a relationship with staff at the Westmead Hospital Oncology Ward. He wasn’t sick - none of his family members or friends were sick - and he didn’t know anyone who worked there. He just decided it was a cause he wanted to support. He began fundraising and donating his own money to support sick children being treated in the Oncology Ward at Westmead. As Dubba’s passion for giving back to the community grew, he encouraged his fellow bowlers and his friends to join him. The yearly Christmas Toy Drive was created. It’s estimated over the past 30 years, Dubba and the men’s bowlers have contributed thousands of dollars in cash donations and toys to benefit sick kids. When asked about why he started the toy drive and the donations to the hospital, Dubba says he just thought it would be something nice to do.

Bathurst RSL
Home is Where the Heart Is
Veritas House is a non-profit organisation in Bathurst that aims to end the cycle of homelessness, providing support and services to young people and families who are facing housing and social challenges. The organisation supports around 137 young people who are either experiencing or are at risk of homelessness in Bathurst each year. A major challenge for Veritas House has been to source safe, stable, appropriate and affordable accommodation for their clients at a time when demand for housing is incredibly high. Through a discussion between the CEO of Veritas, Jodie Pearce, and President of Bathurst RSL, Ian Miller, the idea was born to renovate the property Bathurst RSL had in its portfolio. The costings and idea of investing in the remediation was then taken to the Board, with the aim of making the property available to Veritas House for a token rent. The Club then spent a total of $134,686 to make the property habitable. The Club spent more than a year renovating the property, including reparative work to the foundations, completely new roof, guttering and drainage, painting, new carpet, heating, lighting, fencing and electrical upgrades, and new furnishings, to lease to Veritas House for a heavily subsidised rent, so they could offer the property to young people and families at risk of, or experiencing homelessness. They also work with them through a range of programs and services to establish their own financial independence and get on their feet. The property is now leased by a mum and her young kids who were previously living in their car.

The Community Cafe, founded by Kirsty Parkes in 2021, stands as a testament to the power of neighbours helping neighbours during times of need. The Community Cafe transcended its role as a mere food distribution centre, evolving into a vibrant hub of connection and support. Families gather not only to receive nourishment for their bodies but also to find solace, camaraderie and a listening ear. Evans Head Bowlo
Ensuring a Legacy for the Future
In 2023, The Evans Head Bowling Club (EHBC) Board of Directors became aware of the critical state of financial hardship that the Evans Head Fishermen's Coop was in. This was largely due to the devastating damage caused in the 2022 floods which impacted most of the Northern Rivers region. In April 2023 EHBC took over as the new management of the Coop with a 30-year lease officially signed on 23 February 2024, ensuring that the Fishermen's Coop will continue to grow and create further employment opportunities for the community. They pride themselves in employing local people, offering training, developing skills and continuing to share the knowledge of the industry throughout the generations. EHBC has plans to expand the business by opening a brewery and cafe on site. A significant amount of work needs to be done to restore the building, which will be carried out whilst respecting the heritage and history within the building itself. The future of the Cooperative is very exciting, and they are looking forward to putting some of these ideas into action.
On 11 June 2023, a tragic bus crash occurred in Greta, NSW – claiming the lives of 10 people and severely injuring dozens of other passengers. The Greta Workers Club played a pivotal role in supporting Graham McBride (aka Bangers), a victim of the tragic disaster. Graham suffered immense loss including the lives of his wife, daughter and son-in-law, and sustained severe injuries leaving him unable to work due to a broken back. In response, the Club organized Doing it for Bangers Day on October 28, which drew a crowd of over 600 and featured a raffle with prizes exceeding $50,000. Through the collective efforts of The Bloomfield Group – a coal mining corporation – and the community, the event successfully raised $200,000 to aid Graham in his recovery and support his future needs.

Harbord Diggers
Revitalising Patrol Equipment at Freshwater Beach
Harbord Diggers has cemented its support of beach safety during the summer season by assisting the Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) with purchasing a new All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV), a crucial piece of equipment for beach operations. As part of the 2023 Category One ClubGRANTS, the surf club received a $26,000 grant to contribute towards a replacement ATV after their pre-existing vehicle reached its three-year expiry date. ATVs are indispensable tools for surf patrols as they provide the versatility needed to navigate the dynamic and challenging coastal environment. Their use significantly contributes to the overall beach rescue operations by transporting equipment. The ClubGRANT from Harbord Diggers provided essential financial support for this crucial upgrade, allowing the club to continue its patrols.

Hay Services Club
The Club for Everyone
Hay Services Club (HSC) has re-branded themselves as The Club for Everyone. In 2018, three local mums decided to hold what they thought would be a small pride festival in the country town of Hay (population 2500). HSC jumped at the opportunity to be involved and since then has hosted multiple events across what is now a three-day annual festival – even entering their courtesy bus into the street parade. In an effort to attract visitors to Hay, HSC developed a free caravan and camping area on the grounds of the Club, which benefits the entire small-town economy. HSC is the premier local venue for weddings, baby showers, business functions and expos, such as the Women of the Riverina forum which marked International Women's Day. The Board proactively trains and retains local staff and is continually making improvements, such as outdoor entertainment spaces for family focused open-air events. HSC is continually doing what they can to be the Heart of the Community in Hay.

Five Decades of Service to Our Community
Club President Bob Fleeton has dedicated most of his adult life to supporting junior sport in the Moorebank, Wattle Grove, Holsworthy and Hammondville areas. Bob was instrumental in the establishment of Moorebank Sports Club and his efforts over the past five decades are the reason the Club has the fantastic sporting facilities and the licensed venue at Hammondville Park today. After 25 years at the helm and countless contributions to the community, Bob recently resigned from his post at Moorebank Sports Club – initially as President and then as a Director – due to ailing health. Nonetheless, his dedication to grassroots sport and his efforts to make the local community a better place to live will benefit many generations to come.

The Neutral Bay Club
From Neutral to Top Gear
In 2019, Club Neutral Bay was facing closure with a declining membership and balance sheet showing a loss of $219,000. The Club decided it was time for an overhaul with Peter Lewis stepping in as General Manager in early 2020 – committing to a complete turnaround. Over the next five years Peter reassessed operating procedures, implemented stricter cost controls, increased membership and prices and became strategic in machine leasing and the renegotiation of Club contracts. The decision to turn the club into a community hub has seen partnerships evolve with local schools for tennis programs, after school care and school committees. The club now has a membership base of more than 4000, a tennis membership at capacity with a healthy wait list and the bowls membership has increased to 60 and growing. With the change of direction came the ability to re-invest into the Club – taking advantage of lockdowns to make significant infrastructure investments. The Club has now hit record operating profit of $465,000 in 2023 and is currently in planning stages for more improvements.
